Wayne Rooney arrest highlights problems footballers face at end of career, says Danny Murphy
Danny Murphy believes Wayne Rooneys arrest emphasises the issues facing footballers at the tail-end of their playing careers.Englands record goalscorer was taken into custody last month for public intoxication following an incident at an airport in Virginia.Rooney, 33, paid a small fine and claimed the arrest was the result of feeling disorientated after combining sleeping tablets with alcohol. However, Murphy points out this isn’t the striker’s first alcohol-related scandal.Rooney’s mugshot provided by the Loudoun County Sheriffs Office from his arrest in December2

In isolation, this incident probably doesnt warrant front page, Murphy told talkSPORT. I think the reason it is on the front page is because of who it is and because, with Wayne, theres been a catalogue of events which are generally linked to alcohol.I think sometimes we look at stories and think theres someone behaving badly, but if you take away that structure of 20 years being told what to wear, what to eat, where to be the football keeps you alive. When youre playing football the biggest problem is when youre not playing, youre out of the team, or youre injured.Everything else is manageable because youve got the finance and the club support, but when you get to the end, youre in the big, bad world.Rooney is still banned from driving in the UK after he was caught drink-driving a womans Volkswagen Beetle when nearly three times over the legal limit in September 2017.The former Manchester United star, who now plays for MLS side DC United, triggered a door alarm at Washingtons Dulles airport before he was arrested on December 16. In a statement released on Sunday evening, his spokesman said the footballer was apprehended after a lengthy flight from Saudi Arabia where he was on a one-day business trip.During the flight Wayne took a prescribed amount of sleeping tablets mixed with some alcohol consumption and consequently was disorientated on arrival. He was approached by police who arrested him on a minor misdemeanour charge, the spokesman said.Rooney made a one-off appearance for England in a friendly in November2

He received a statutory automatic fine and was released shortly afterwards at the airport. The matter is now at an end.Wayne would like to put on record his appreciation for the manner he was treated by all involved.
