Newcastle takeover latest: Mike Ashley no longer looking to sell and takes club off market
Mike Ashley is no longer looking to sell Newcastle after taking the club off the market, reports claim.The Newcastle owner has been trying to sell the club for the past 17 months, but has grown frustrated after failing to see any offers materialise.2

There had been alleged interest from Amanda Staveley and Peter Kenyon to buy the club, but they failed to match Ashleys 280million asking price.The Sunday Times say the Magpies have spent money on legal fees to aid a potential sale since October 2017 when Ashley revealed his desire to sell up.Kenyon and former Manchester City chief executive Garry Cook have been unable to raise funds to complete a takeover, while Staveleys three proposals were rejected last year.2

In November, Newcastle fans took to the streets of London to call on Ashley, who bought the club for 133million in 2007, to leave Tyneside.The business tycoon has frustrated supporters by failing to sufficiently back popular manager Rafa Benitez in the transfer market.The Magpies broke their 14-year transfer record when they signed Miguel Almiron from MLS club Atlanta United for 20million in January. The fee eclipsed the 16million they paid Real Madrid for Michael Owen in 2005. With Ashley set to stay at St James Park, his number one priority will be tying down Benitez to a new deal.The Spaniard, who guided Newcastle to a top-10 finish with limited funds last term, is out of contract at the end of the season.Benitez is believed to want transfer assurances from Ashley before putting pen to paper on fresh terms.
