Premier League managers prepared to take teams off the pitch if players subjected to racism
Several Premier League managers say they would take their teams off the pitch if players were subjected to the same racist behaviour that England stars suffered in Montenegro on Monday.Raheem Sterling, Danny Rose and Callum Hudson-Odoi were subjected to racist abuse during England’s Euro 2020 qualifier against Montenegro in Podgorica.3

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, Manchester City’s Pep Guardiola and Cardiff boss Neil Warnock all called for stronger action during their press conferences on Friday.Klopp said: “I don’t know what to say about that really because it’s absolutely disappointing that at this moment in our world something like this is still possible, that people still do that, they use their voice for completely the wrong things.“It’s really difficult for me to hear things like that in the stadium or see it in the moment if it’s one guy or two guys or whatever. If it’s the whole stand, then I would do it 100 per cent. “But that’s too much power for one or two idiots or three or four idiots. We have to find ways to punish these guys, to get them out.“Whatever I could do, I would do. We have to stop games, we have to do everything.“I understand that Gareth didn’t do it and didn’t say, ‘Come on, off the pitch’, but we have to make clear that’s not allowed and that’s not possible.”3

Guardiola backed calls for players to walk off the pitch

Man City winger Sterling responded to monkey chants from the Montenegro fans by pulling his ears out when he scored England’s fifth goal during the 5-1 victory, and Guardiola was asked whether players could walk off the pitch in protest.He replied: “We could do that. Football is a strong weapon to defend the principles of humanity.”Meanwhile, Bluebirds boss Warnock added: “It’s got to be more severe than a fine or a slap on the wrist.

A rule that can permit us to stop the match.“Of course he is very young, but I think that he is really very strong. The character is really very strong. I saw him very well yesterday, so I think that he is strong enough.”
